Why I Created Clothes for Kids with Sensory Issues
When your child is sensitive to clothing, even getting dressed can feel like another battle in the day. A tag that seems harmless to us can feel unbearable to them. Seams we donāt notice can become the only thing they can focus on.
I know this because Iāve lived it. My son has eczema and struggled with irritation from clothing daily. Thatās what led me to start Treehouse, not just as a clothing brand but as a way to make getting dressed easier, calmer, and more predictable for kids like mine.
Common Clothing Triggers for Sensory Kids
If your child has sensory sensitivities, you probably already know what typical clothing can do:
- That tiny tag at the neck? It might as well be a thorn.
- Seams can feel like ridges digging into their skin.
- Tight waistbands create tension that they carry all day.
- Rough fabrics are overwhelming, both physically and emotionally.
These arenāt quirks or preferences. Theyāre real barriers to comfort, learning, and being present.
What I Designed Instead
Everything in our sensory-friendly collection was built to solve these problems, not just in theory, but in practice. My child (and many others) tested every piece.
- No tags: Everything is printed directly onto the fabric. No itching, no cutting them out.
- Flat seams: Smooth against the skin, so they donāt become a distraction.
- Soft, organic cotton: GOTS-certified and gentle enough for even the most reactive skin.
- Breathable: So they donāt overheat during play or rest.
- Consistently soft: Wash after wash, so comfort isnāt a one-time thing.
If something doesnāt pass the comfort test with our real-life wear testers, it doesnāt go into the collection.
What This Means for Your Child
Imagine your child puts on their shirt... and thatās it. No pulling at the seams. No tugging at the neck. No arguments about the fabric.
They just move on with their day. Build the block tower. Sit through storytime. Run around the park. The clothes disappear into the background, which is exactly how it should be.
One parent told me, āMy son usually refuses to get dressed without a fuss, but with this shirt, he just put it on and said it felt ācozy.ā Thatās never happened before.ā
Thatās the goal.
Simple Care That Doesnāt Add Work
Youāve got enough going on. Thatās why everything is easy to care for; just machine wash cold, tumble dry low. The softness stays. The seams stay flat. The fit stays consistent.
Because predictability is part of comfort too.
