As parents, we all want our kiddos to feel comfortable and confident in the clothes they wear. But we also want them to grow up in a society that values them for who they are without deciding who they are for them. One way we can do this is by choosing gender-neutral clothing. And gender neutral clothing doesn’t have to be boring or bland. Quite the opposite!
So firstly, what is it?
Gender-neutral clothing is clothing that is not designed or marketed specifically for one gender or the other. It is designed to be worn by individuals of any gender identity, without reinforcing traditional gender stereotypes or expectations. Not only does it promote inclusivity and acceptance, but it also allows our children to explore their own interests and express themselves freely, without being limited by societal gender norms.
Traditional gendered clothing can be limiting, it often reinforces gender stereotypes, limiting your child's choices and self-expression. How so?
Well, how often have you noticed that boys clothing is largely centered around vehicles; gigantic monster trucks and sports cars or angry looking animals? In contrast, girls’ styles feature lots of pink, purple and cute princessy animal characters. While seemingly harmless and well liked by many a kid (including my own!) sticking solely to these styles can limit your child's interests and imagination.
Perhaps to some extent there is little harm in that, but advocates of gender neutral clothing argue the opposite, noting that by choosing these kinds of styles we inadvertently guide and shape our childrens’ interests down very narrow paths, closing them off to the opportunity to get to know themselves.
Opting, at least in part for gender-neutral clothing can help break down some of these stereotypes and allow your child the space to explore their interests without being confined by societal expectations
